Mechano-growth factor is the splice variant of IGF-1 that muscle produces in response to mechanical loading and damage, and its distinguishing feature is the E-domain, which appears to act on satellite cell proliferation through a pathway separate from the IGF-1 receptor. The unmodified peptide clears within minutes, which makes it impractical to study; PEG conjugation extends that window substantially.
