Batch Number

Definition

The identifier tying a quantity of material to the records of its manufacture and testing. It is the only thing linking a vial in hand to a certificate on a screen, which is why a certificate whose batch number does not appear on the label proves nothing about that vial.

What this means for research sourcing

Purity and identity verification are central to research reproducibility. Every Volta compound ships with >99% HPLC-verified purity and a certificate of analysis.

Related Terms in Quality

Third-Party Testing

Analysis by a laboratory with no commercial interest in the result, as against in-house testing by the manufacturer or seller. The independence is the whole value, and it is only real if the laboratory is named and its report is reproducible.

X-Ray Crystallography

Determination of a molecule's three-dimensional atomic structure from the diffraction pattern of a crystal of it. It is a structural method rather than a release test, and it is how most receptor and ligand geometry in the literature was established.

cGMP (Current Good Manufacturing Practice)

The regulations governing how licensed pharmaceutical manufacturers must produce and control a product, covering facilities, records, personnel and validation. They apply to drug manufacture and not to research-grade supply, which is a distinction worth keeping straight.

CAS Number

The identifier the Chemical Abstracts Service assigns to a specific substance, such as 137525-51-0 for BPC-157. It pins identity down in a way a trade name or an internal code cannot, and a compound genuinely without one is not the same thing as a missing field.

INCI Name

The International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients name, which is the spelling required on a cosmetic label worldwide. One molecule therefore carries two names: GHK-Cu is Copper Tripeptide-1, and Matrixyl is Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4.

Analyte

The substance a method is set up to measure, as distinct from the sample it sits in and from everything else the detector sees. A purity method has the peptide as its analyte; a residual solvent method run on the same vial has a different one.

Analytical Method

The written procedure a laboratory follows to produce a result: sample preparation, instrument conditions, how the signal is turned into a number and what counts as a valid run. Two laboratories reporting different purities for one lot are usually running different methods rather than disagreeing.

Acceptance Criterion

The limit a result is judged against, fixed before the sample is run. A purity specification of not less than 99% is an acceptance criterion; a result of 98.7% fails it whatever the laboratory thinks of the material.
