Previous research links weight loss treatments and surgery after diagnosis to better heart health and longer life. GLP-1 agonist prescriptions have risen sharply since 2020. A RAND report states that about 12% of Americans have taken these drugs for weight loss.

Study Design and Patient Data

Investigators conducted a retrospective cohort study using electronic health records. They reviewed data from more than 840,000 breast cancer patients diagnosed between 2006 and 2023. The analysis focused on those with obesity or type 2 diabetes.

GLP-1 receptor agonist use correlated with decreased risk of death from any cause during a 10-year follow-up. Users also had lower recurrence rates over the same period. These patterns appeared specific to patients with added risks from weight or diabetes.

The results match early lab studies and add to evidence on GLP-1 receptor agonists in cancer care, according to Kristina L. Tatum, PsyD, MS, of the VCU School of Public Health. Tatum served as lead author. "Our findings align with emerging preclinical research and contribute to a growing body of literature related to GLP-1 RA use in oncology settings," she said.

Insights from Study Leaders

Bernard F. Fuemmeler, Ph.D., MPH, offered key perspective as senior author. He holds the role of associate director for population sciences and the Gordon D. Ginder, M.D., Chair in Cancer Research at VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center. "This study suggests that GLP-1 drugs may offer protective benefits potentially improving survival and recurrence risk in some female patients with breast cancer, whether this is related to weight control, improve cardiovascular health or other mechanisms remains to be studied," Fuemmeler stated.

Fuemmeler emphasized the promise of these drugs as extra support for breast cancer care. "Our study underscores the potential of GLP-1 RAs as an adjunct strategy for improving cancer-related outcomes among patients with breast cancer, although clinical trials are needed to inform effective therapeutic approaches and clinical decision making," he added.

Calls for Further Investigation

More work is required to clarify any direct biological effects of GLP-1 receptor agonists on breast cancer results. The research group plans randomized clinical trials to test these links. Such trials will guide treatment choices and decisions in clinics.

Obesity influences cancer rates broadly. Reports note that more than half of cancer patients in England had prior obesity. Excess body weight drives increases in cancer among younger adults.
